When the CBD surge made its way into the already booming pet product industry, many dog owners leapt at the opportunity to purchase therapeutic hemp products for their beloved friends. But what exactly does CBD do for dogs, and is it similar to what it can do for humans? Let's take a look.
Currently, there is little to no scientific data on using CBD to treat dogs. However, there’s anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggesting it can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, as well as helping to control seizures. According to American Kennel Club's Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Jerry Klein, CBD can also be used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, cardiac benefits, appetite stimulation, and more, although there is no conclusive data yet that supports this. This means that it is still a little too early to know exactly how CBD may improve your pets wellbeing.
Two excellent studies have provided some evidence of the positive benefits of CBD in dogs with osteoarthritis and epilepsy. Veterinarians at Colorado State University conducted a study, published in 2019, that demonstrated the favorable effects of CBD (2.5 mg/kg twice daily) as an adjunctive therapy on the frequency of seizures in nine dogs with epilepsy as compared to a placebo group. While at Cornell University, Veterinarians were able to demonstrate the favorable effects of CBD on pain and activity associated with osteoarthritis in 16 dogs. Dogs that received CBD were generally perceived as more comfortable and active.
It's always important to keep your individual pet's diet and health in mind when introducing mew treats/products, and this same caution should be used when introducing your dog to CBD. However, studies and pet owners both point to CBD as an excellent means of keeping your dog comfortable and healthy. Luckily for you, at Experience CBD we only use the highest quality ingredients in our pet product collection!
